The cover picture shows the effect of the bacterium Pseudomonas cichorii on lettuce (brownish spots). Pseudomonas cichorii is a Gram‐negative bacterium which on lettuce causes a disease known as “varnish spot”. The disease is characterised by large necrotic brown‐blackish areas that occur on the blades and petioles of leaves. Overimposed is the peculiar lipid A structure of the lipopolysaccharide from P. cichorii . Lipid A constitutes the endotoxic principle expressing all the pathophysiological effects known to be induced by lipopolysaccharide molecule. Details are discussed in the article by A. Molinaro on p. 3119 ff.
