In contrast to the abundant literature available on the oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols, examples of oxidation of tertiary alcohols are rather rare and a general review on this topic does not exist. Therefore, this microreview will briefly describe the different existing methods, mainly metal‐mediated, which consist of one or two‐electron oxidations and usually lead to rearrangement, cyclization or fragmentation products. Some related data is also given for fragmentation reactions observed in basic or acid medium, or catalyzed by metal complexes without a real oxidation step.
