By introducing a linear slot to a microstrip‐line‐fed printed square ring slot antenna, a novel dual‐frequency operation is obtained. The linear slot is embedded in the inner conducting patch of the printed ring slot, and oriented in parallel to the slot edge coupled to the 50 Ω microstrip feed line. In this case, the first two resonant frequencies of the proposed antenna can be excited with good impedance matching, resulting in dual‐frequency operation. By tuning the length of the embedded linear slot, the frequency ratio between the two resonant frequencies can be varied. Details of the proposed antenna are described, and experimental results of constructed prototypes are presented. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 28: 373–375, 2001.
