We have theoretically investigated wavelength conversion in linear tapered‐waveguide laser‐diode amplifiers using cross‐gain modulation (XGM). The extinction ratio and the average output power of the converted signal have been compared with those of a nontapered semiconductor laser amplifier. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
