The design of the circular polarization (CP) radiation of a slot‐coupled compact square microstrip antenna is described. The wider bandwidth CP radiation is achieved by using a novel asymmetric coupling slot in the ground plane of the microstrip feed line. Also, the reduction in antenna size is obtained by embedding a cross slot in the patch. Results show that the proposed antenna can have a CP bandwidth ∼74% higher and an antenna size ∼22% smaller, as compared to the regular‐size CP design, using a nearly square patch with a simple inclined coupling slot at a fixed operating frequency. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
