A novel algorithm for error correction in six‐port‐based direct receivers (SPDR) is introduced. The new adaptive method provides a software correction of the hardware imperfection, such as phase and gain imbalance, improving the bit‐error performances for direct receiver architectures. The resulting calibration procedure is performed on the incoming modulated signal, and has no need for additional standards. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
