This paper proposes a compact design of a circular patch antenna operating in the TM 01 ‐mode for conical‐pattern radiation. The proposed antenna has a top‐loaded monopole feed centered below the circular patch, and by embedding four arc‐shaped slots of about 90° in the circular patch, the excited radial patch surface current distributions can be effectively meandered, resulting in significant lowering of the resonant frequency of the TM 01 ‐mode. This resonant‐frequency lowering can lead to a large antenna size reduction for a fixed operating frequency. Moreover, probably owing to the embedded slots in the circular patch, which permits the feeding monopole to radiate through the slotted circular patch, gain enhancement of the proposed antenna is also observed. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
