A study is conducted on an impedance‐matching technique for the latching ferrite variable polarizer in a circular cylindrical waveguide. Using the mode‐matching method, a formula is developed for the calculation of the design parameters of a λ/4 impedance‐matching transformer. Excellent agreement is observed between the analytical result and measurement. Furthermore, an improved impedance‐matching technique is introduced to increase the bandwidth from 4.06 to 14.5%. This provides qualitative guidance for the design of analogous devices. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 27: 366–368, 2000.
