In this paper, an eight‐element shaped‐beam‐pattern microstrip antenna array for the base station in a mobile communication system has been designed. A cosecant pattern in the main beam which allows a constant power distribution in the service zone is achieved by feeding linearly varied amplitudes and phases into elements of the array. The array operates at 27.5 GHz, and a tilt angle of about 20° from the broadside is obtained. The sidelobes are on the order of −10 dB, and the cross‐polarization level is about −20 dB. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 27: 296–297, 2000.
