An analysis of the application of different PML algorithms to structures containing different isotropic dielectric media is carried out. In particular, the analysis is focused on how to select the correct matching conditions and corresponding FDTD updating equations for the split‐field and unsplit‐field PMLs based on either E and H or D and H fields. It reveals that, although the implementations of the different PML schemes differ from each other, numerical results obtained from these PML algorithms are exactly the same once the matching conditions are adopted properly for the different PMLs. In addition, among the above PMLs, only Berenger's split‐field PMLs cannot be constructed as material‐independent PMLs for waves propagating in isotropic dielectric media. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
