In most cases, the concept of high efficiency has been studied in transistors, but unfortunately, there are very few applications to antennas. The aim of this work is to develop a new concept in order to complement and facilitate the design of active antennas in transmission. We show that a patch antenna adequately fed by using an active device can work as a high‐efficiency active patch (HEAP) antenna. The main problem is to determine the dimensions, shape, and location of the feeding point of an active patch antenna. A HEAP antenna has been developed with a transistor efficiency of about 80% @ V cc =12.5 and EIRP=2.1 W. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 27: 122–125, 2000.
