A novel method is presented to evaluate the effective dielectric constant of open microstrip lines. The spectral Green's functions are split into their asymptotic form and monotonically decaying functions. Poles and residues of the latter are obtained by applying the GPOF method. Closed‐form expressions are employed to evaluate the spectral integrals rapidly. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 27: 72–77, 2000.
