The shorted planar monopole is compared with the simple wideband square planar monopole. The shorted antenna is optimized for future wireless networking bands by the choice of planar dimension and feedgap separation. The antenna offers a return loss greater than 10 dB from 1.55 to 5.85 GHz. The pattern is shown to be omnidirectional within the impedance bandwidth. Antenna parameters are compared for both antennas. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 26: 360–362, 2000.
