Needle‐plane electrode systems of various shapes are considered, both in air and in the presence of space‐charge effects. A two‐step conformal‐mapping finite‐difference procedure is used in order to compute the field behaviors and the maximum electric stress. Data are discussed with reference to results presented in the literature, already derived by means of finite‐element and boundary‐element methods. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
