A method to design a reference function for detecting synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images with the joint transform correlator is presented. The method optimizes the correlation profile through the Lagrange multipliers technique. The system is invariant to partially out‐of‐plane rotation in the target image. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
