A novel design of a microstrip‐line‐fed printed semicircular slot antenna is proposed. A prototype of the proposed antenna is also constructed and experimentally studied. Results show that, by protruding a small rectangular slot of proper dimensions along the direction of the microstrip feed line, good impedance matching over a wide operating bandwidth for the proposed antenna can be obtained. The constructed prototype shows an operating bandwidth, determined by the 10 dB return loss, of about 46%, which is about three times that of a corresponding conventional printed wide rectangular slot antenna. Details of the proposed antenna and obtained experimental results are presented. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 26: 237–239, 2000.
