Abstract In this paper, we present a novel design scheme where the power of a local oscillator (LO) in a transmitter circuitry is intentionally leaked into the receiver circuitry through an antenna, and is used as the LO for the receiver. As a result, only a single LO is used for Tx / Rx duplex circuitry, while multiple functionality with the antenna is achieved. In our example, a single rectangular patch antenna is used, with its spatial orthogonality of the patch edges being utilized to achieve the necessary coupling (or leakage). Preliminary experimental results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 26: 122–124, 2000.
