Problems associated with the inclusion of weight concern as a necessary and defining criterion for the diagnosis of the eating disorders are reviewed. It is proposed that the substitution of the criterion of eating restraint that is overinvested by the subject might have advantages for both clinical classification and for research. © 1993 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
