Clinical research on the eating disorders has continued to expand and develop. Several significant conceptual and methodological problems are identified in the extant literature. The problem areas include the definition of cases, the control of relevant variables, and methods of assessment and strategies for treatment outcome trials. Suggestions are presented to increase the standards of research investigation and to guide future studies.
