The present study examines the factor composition of the HSCL‐58 and the item content agreement with the five postulated dimensions based on a sample of eating‐disordered patients. The results indicated moderate factor congruence given that only two (Obsessive‐Compulsiveness and Somatization) of the five original dimensions and a third dimension consisting of a combination of the Depression/Interpersonal Sensitivity factors emerged from the factor analyses. It is suggested that clinicians exercise caution when clinical interpretations are made based on the symptom dimensions of the HSCL‐58 with eating‐disordered patients. The use of the HSCL‐58 as a measure of general distress rather than as a measure of five independent symptom dimensions is also recommended.
