It has been suggested that the anxiety‐reduction function of purgation is of fundamental importance in the maintenance of bulimia nervosa, and that bulimic episodes would cease if the escape response of vomiting were removed. Five case histories are presented in which patients ceased vomiting while continuing to experience bulimic episodes. If the anxiety‐reduction model is to be retained, at least for some patients, an analysis is required of the conditions under which it is not applicable.
