Compliance with medical and/or psychological treatment regimens in health settings is a significant concern for health care professionals. Understanding the personality characteristics of patients who are compliant can help to both predict compliant behavior and to alter treatment procedures to achieve maximum compliance. This study used the MMPI to predict compliant behavior in a weight control program. Several variables were found to predict program attendance. However there were no correlations between MMPI scores and actual weight loss. Results are discussed in terms of the many meanings that may be attributed to the word “compliance”.
