The recent characterization of rumination as a “benign” disorder deserves further study and reconsideration. The frequency of appearance of rumination in certain subgroups (retarded, eating disorder, association with affective disorder) and the range of medical complications and psychosocial consequences are notable. Furthermore, gut neuroendocrine abnormalities and CNS integrative disturbance affecting motility may be markers of major psychiatric disorders.
