Measures of locus of control and life events during the past 6–12 months were both found to be important predictors of weight loss for mothers involved in a child and family obesity treatment program. Life events were important, however, in their suppressor characteristics upon the relationship between locus of control and weight loss. It is concluded that the degree to which locus of control predicts individuals' weight loss may be enhanced if the “nuisance” influence of recent life events is removed from control beliefs.
