The clinical concepts course, outcome, and prognosis are defined, and some problems inherent in research on outcome and prognosis of anorexia nervosa are discussed. Preliminary results are given from an ongoing long‐term study, consisting of a second follow‐up investigation of the surviving probands in a Swedish anorexia nervosa series, originally described in 1970. The observation time since the admission as proband is now 22 to 50 years. Data are presented on mortality from anorexia nervosa and suicide.
