The mother‐infant feeding relationship was examined as it has been discussed in the literature through both a definition of the behavioral parameters involved in the feeding situation and a psychological explanation for the differences in these behaviors as they have been observed. Rather than to continue to isolate the psychoanalytic literature from the behavioral observations that have been made on infants and their mothers, the present review sought to explore the interplay between the two modes of thought. The major question proposed to the literature was whether the success or failure of the early feeding relationship could be predictive of either the success of mother‐infant interactions or even the strength of the mother‐child bond.
