Previous research that has used the Family Environment Scale (FES) to study differences between Ss' ratings of their „present” and „past,” or intergenerational families has not investigated: (a) whether the order of administration has a significant effect on the ratings that are being made; and (b) the exact nature of differences between Ss' ratings of their current and past families. These issues are examined with data from a study of intergenerational FES ratings on a sample of intact, „non‐clinic” married couples ( N = 66). Unlike previous research that has used the FES, the two FES ratings were administered in a counter‐balanced order. Findings suggest that the order of administration does have an effect on the second family ratings that are being made and that attention be focused on the interpretation of differences in intergenerational family ratings.
