Thirty‐six parochial school students were randomly selected and assigned to one of three treatment groups. Students in the first group were tested by an examiner who wore a moderately proportioned gold cross, while the second group was examined by the same psychologist as he wore a similarly proportioned gold Star of David. The examiner wore no symbol as he tested the third group. A one‐way ANOVA and Scheffé after tests revealed that scores varied as a function of the presence and type of symbol that was displayed. Implications for practitioners and consideration for additional research were noted and discussed.
