Dealt with the association of race to mental test performance and how this association interacts with age and with the instrument used to assess intelligence. This researcher wished to determine whether this study supported Kaufman's and Kaufman's (1973) investigation, which reported no differences in the General Cognitive Indexes of the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities obtained by matched groups of preschool blacks and whites, contrasted with significant General Cognitive Index discrepancies for school‐age blacks and whites. Forty children were administered the McCarthy Scales and either the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence or the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children‐Revised. At the preschool level, the black and white children differed significantly in their obtained mean General Cognitive Indices and in their Wechsler mean Full Scale IQs. The results further Showed that at the school‐age level, the black and white children also differed significantly on these two criteria.
