Related the severity of the most recent offense (Offense Severity Scale) and the probability of recidivism (California Base Expectancy Scale) to a number of social/background and psychometric variables in a sample of inmates incarcerated in a Canadian federal institution ( N = 457). Multiple regression indicated that when the group was considered as a totality the most consistent relationships with both offense severity and probability of recidivism centered on the background variables, in particular, the total number of arrests and first offense variables (age, type of offense, and sentence). Further analyses were performed by classifying the group along the offense severity dimension, and the results of these analyses clearly demonstrated the heterogeneity of the groups in question.
