Relationship of specific and global measures of asertion in college females

Sixty volunteer college females S s were videotaped while role‐playing sences on the Behavioral Assertivenss Test‐Revised (BAT‐R), a behavioral test desigend to assess expression of positive and negative assertiveness with male and female role partners. Two self‐report measures of assertiveness were administered (Personal Reaction Scale [PRS] and College Self Expression Scale [CSES]). Based on overall ratings of assertivness across all scence, high and low assertion. groups (top and bottom third) were identified. Results indicated that on 6 of the 10 behavioral components high and low assertion groups were differentaiated significantly. Analyses of interactions (level of assertiveness; positive vs. negative expression; male vs. female role partern) confirm previous findings of a sitution‐specfic assertiveness. No relationship was found between the PRS and overall assertiveness on the BAT‐R but a significant albeit moderate correlation was found between the CSES and overall assertiveness on the BAT‐R.
