This study investigated the hypothesized interactive effects of E gender, S gender, and S need for approval upon the contents and latencies of responses to sexual stimuli. Male and female S s were administered the Galbraith double‐entendre word association test by either an experienced male or female E and completed the Marlowe‐Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Analyses of variance on the sexual content scores and response latencies did not reveal the predicted interactions. Response latencies were significantly longer for sexual vs. neutral stimuli. The results were discussed in terms of the apparent resistance to expectancy variables of the double‐entendre scores. The response latency measure was viewed as a potentially valuable formal characteristic of sexual associates that should be included with the content score.
