The Buss‐Durkee Inventory was administered to 95 male psychiatric patients. Each patient was rated for aggression by two nurses and a psychiatrist. The three sets of ratings had significant correlations with each other, but were not related significantly to the aggression and hostility subscales. A canonical variate analysis of the data also failed to yield significant results. Age was found to be correlated significantly with each set of ratings and to be unrelated to the subscale scores. This suggested that validation studies that use psychiatric patients should take account of the age and severity of illness of the Ss and that a more profitable design might involve samples other than psychiatric ones.
