A new equation is proposed for relating solvent self‐diffusion coefficients and mutual diffusion coefficients for polymer–solvent systems. The formulation of the new equation avoids a friction‐coefficient formalism, and hence the new equation does not require the thermodynamic properties of the polymer–solvent system. A comparison has been made of the predictions of the proposed equation with experimental data for the benzene–rubber system. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 77: 3195–3199, 2000
