For long incident pulses, measurement of two‐photon absorption coefficients can be complicated by excited‐state absorption. We develop here a quantitative ab initio model to determine the contribution of excited‐state absorption in the interpretation of the two‐photon absorption data for such materials. We present representative calculations of this effect for some selected systems. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Quant Chem 80: 1039–1042, 2000
