Raman spectra of solid iodine cyanide at ambient temperature and at pressures up to 6 GPa are reported. There is no evidence of any structural phase transitions or of any major molecular distortions in this pressure range. A relatively large increase in the wavenumber of the librational mode is indicative of appreciable strengthening of intermolecular bonding. At pressures above 6 GPa, irreversible colour changes occur, as a result of molecular dissociation and the release of iodine. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
