During the years 1953 through 1955, a total of 2,364 children and young adolescents aged 0–18 years were discharged from the Stockholm Child Guidance Clinics (CGC). Among thsse patients, 125 (68 boys, 57 girls) were under 3 years of age. This follow‐up study was made 30 years later. Records from psychiatric clinics and data from the available official registers were used. Most of the infants were judged to be mentally healthy or to have shown mild environmental reactions. However, 60% of the youngest patients were mentioned in at least one of the registers during the follow‐up period, with an overrepresen‐tation of males. The initial evaluation was not predictive of future development. Boys developed social maladjustment, whereas girls applied more often for psychiatric care during the follow‐up period. Significant factors for the outcome were gender and parental diagnosis at CGC.
