Small cell carcinoma of the esophagus is extremely rare, and usually has a rapidly progressive course. This article reports a patient with synchronous multiple small cell carcinomas of the esophagus who had a prompt and complete (although brief) remission following treatment with a combination chemotherapy program used in patients with small cell lung cancers. Recognition of this entity is important, since appropriate treatment with multiagent chemotherapy has a major impact on prognosis.
