One hundred and ninety‐five patients with squamous cell cancer of the cervix have been followed for 2–4 years. Pretreatment CEA determination was of prognostic value only in patients with early clinical disease. Serial determinations of CEA after primary treatment are of limited value in advanced stages. Sixty‐five per cent of patients developing recurrent cancer after initial therapy for Stage IB disease had plasma CEA levels exceeding 5.0 μg/l. In many of these cases the CEA elevation preceded the clinical diagnosis by several months.
