The National Large Bowel Cancer Project, sponsored by the Organ Site Programs of the National Cancer Institute, conducted a three‐day workshop addressing the issues of prevention and treatment of large bowel cancer. The workshop, held in Houston, Texas on January 31–February 2, 1979, dealt primarily with the status of basic and applied research directed toward carcinoma of the colon and rectum. The workshop was organized into five separate panels, each covering a major discipline, and consisted of formal presentations, general discussions, and evening Round Table Discussions. The final session considered a review of substantive data and conclusions generated by speakers and other participants. Information registered at this workshop will be used to ascertain prospects for prevention, to design new approaches for treatment, and to identify prospective areas for fruitful research which will lead to control of large bowel cancer.
