In spite of a similar embryologic origin, the concurrence of carotid body tumor and pheochromocytoma is extremely rare; only three cases have been reported in the literature. Two additional cases with examination of catecholamine contents in the tumor tissue were reported and discussed with reference to the above three cases. Carotid body tumor and adrenal pheochromocytoma are easily distinguishable by their histologic features. In one of our two cases, extra‐adrenal retroperitoneal pheochromocytoma containing scanty chromaffin granules and negative adrenalin had a histologic picture similar to that of a retroperitoneal chemodectoma, which is incapable usually of catecholamine production. However, the extraordinarily high content of noradrenalin provided unquestionable evidence that it was a pheochromocytoma.
