As a positive index of the increasing awareness of the rehabilitation needs of patients with stomas, growing interest in the employment of enterostomal therapy specialists is cited. Functions of personnel with varying preparation in patient care are discussed, with special emphasis given to the provision of comprehensive care and teaching as contrasted with the performance of technical tasks. Program building in the hospital is delineated. The objectives of followup and of outpatient clinics are described with suggestions for staffing, funding, operating, and administering such services. Enterostomal training and the functions of the International Association for Enterostomal Therapy are briefly mentioned.
