Thirty‐three MV roentgen treatment of an oropharynx carcinoma caused injury to the brain stem at the following dose levels: I. Massive necrosis of the brain stem was found in those regions which had received more than 6000 rads; 2. Partial necrosis and pronounced reactive changes were found in those regions which had received 5800–6000 rads; and 3. Edema and mild gliosis were found with decreasing intensity from about 5800 down to 3000 rads. The doses were given in 40 days.
