Marked odynophagia and dysphagia occurred in a patient with Hodgkin's disease. Initially, treatment for presumed monilia esophagitis resulted in clinical improvement, but symptoms recurred. Esophageal biopsy was then performed through an esophagoscope and the diagnosis of herpesvirus esophagitis established. Antemortem diagnosis of this entity has only rarely been made. The availability of possibly effective anti‐viral chemotherapy necessitates accurate diagnosis of esophagitis in an immunosuppressed patient. This may require esophageal culture, cytology, and esophagoscopy with esophageal biopsy.
