Pathologic examination of 20 amputation specimens of osteosarcoma revealed no unappreciated extension of tumor and no “skip areas” in the marrow cavity. Based on published clinical and pathologic data, transmedullary amputation appears to be a reasonable treatment for osteosarcoma arising in the distal portion of a long bone.
