A review was made of cytologic data from 113 patients who had a diagnosis of herpesvirus infection on Papanicoloau stained smears from the cervix. A total of 43 from this group had additional abnormalities diagnosed from “atypical cells” to invasive cancer. However, 28 of these 43 patients demonstrated intraepithelial neoplasia before evidence of herpesvirus was noted on later smears. In addition, 81% or 24 patients in this group of 28 had primary‐type herpesvirus infection. These data would appear to be positive evidence for the greater susceptibility of atypical cervical epithelium to herpesvirus infections.
