Open perineal cryosurgical destruction of advanced (Stage D and large Stage C) prostatic carcinoma seems to be an effective means for rapid destruction of the large local tumor mass. The procedure is well tolerated and free from major complications. Pain relief is a frequent postoperative finding and may be due to the destruction of the local lesion. However, we have been able to detect neither objective evidence of regression of metastatic lesions nor changes in immune responsiveness of patients so treated.
