A progress report is presented of a randomized clinical trial being conducted at Stanford University to test the value of combination chemotherapy following total lymphoid irradiation for patients with Hodgkin's disease. One hundred and thirteen previously untreated patients, with intermediate stages of disease, IB to IIIB , have been entered into the trial. The tolerance of patients to the prolonged aggressive treatment program is considered acceptable. With maximum follow‐up, approaching 4 years since onset of treatment, significant improvement in disease‐free survival has been observed, and overall survival is excellent. The factors which should make for a cautious interpretation of these early results are reviewed.
