Abstract The carcinogenic capacity of cigarette smoke in man is well documented. The habit is deeply set in the popular culture of our times, and a significant segment of the population appears to continue smoking in spite of all warnings. The National Cancer Institute is encouraging public information campaigns against smoking particularly as directed to the younger population segment. At the same time, clinical and pharmacological research towards cessation of the habit is being pursued, as well as studies to identify individuals at higher risk. Further legislative action will be proposed to encourage manufacture and sale of the least hazardous cigarettes that current technology can provide. Finally, maximum cooperation is being sought with the tobacco industry and other experts for the definition and conduct of research towards ever improving models of less hazardous cigarettes, and their timely promotion to public acceptance.
