Four of 20 patients with small‐cell carcinoma of the lung demonstrated diffuse osteoblastic metastases throughout the axial skeleton, except for the skull, several months after having shown clinical benefit from systemic chemotherapy. This manifestation of small‐cell carcinoma confirms the propensity of this carcinoma to disseminate to bone. Its occurrence may be related to alteration of host‐tumor factors by effective therapy on previously established bone metastases. On the other hand, this phenomenon may reflect an inherent property of the tumor in a disease that is seldom associated with sufficiently prolonged survival required to develop visible x‐ray changes.
